A New App for the U.S. Market
TikTok is reportedly developing a brand-new version of its app specifically for users in the United States, as part of preparations for a sale to a consortium of U.S. investors. This information comes from a report by The Information, citing unnamed sources familiar with the matter.
A Potential Deal on the Horizon
Former U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Friday that he plans to begin discussions with China regarding a TikTok deal as early as Monday or Tuesday. He also mentioned that a deal is “pretty much” in place for the sale of the popular short-video platform.
Planned App Store Launch: September 5
According to the report, TikTok intends to roll out the new app to U.S. app stores on 5 September 2025. Users will eventually need to download this version to continue using the platform. However, the current app will remain functional until at least March 2026, though that timeline remains subject to change.
Divestment Deadline Extended
In June, Trump extended the deadline for ByteDance — TikTok’s China-based parent company — to divest its U.S. assets. The new cut-off date is set for 17 September 2025.
China’s Influence Still Looms
Earlier this year, efforts were underway to spin off TikTok’s U.S. operations into a new company controlled by American investors. Those talks were stalled after China signalled it wouldn’t approve the deal — a reaction to the steep tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on Chinese goods.
Trump acknowledged that finalising any agreement will likely require China’s approval.
TikTok Yet to Respond
At the time of writing, TikTok has not publicly commented on the reported app launch or sale discussions. Reuters also noted it was unable to independently confirm the details.
