Cast Members Who Are Not Returning To The Scream 7 Sequel

Back in November, it was announced that Melissa Barrera would not star in the up-and-coming film sequel of Scream because of her controversial social media posts about the Israel-Hamas conflict.

The actor had previously starred as the character of Sam Carpenter in both Scream VI and Scream of 2022. Her character was introduced as villain Billy Loomis’ daughter in Scream. This character was set to follow the path of Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) as the new lead of the franchise.

Very soon after Barrera’s exit, it also got announced that Jenna Ortega – who starred in the last two Scream films — was no longer reprising her role in the upcoming film Scream 7.

Various reports stated that the reason for Ortega’s departure was due to her super busy schedule for the second season of Netflix’s popular series Wednesday and also her wrapping on the film Beetlejuice 2.

Who Is In The New Cast Then?

After facing several changes, the official cast of Scream 7 remains a bit unclear. However, it is anticipated that after starring in the previous installment, Jasmin Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding are going to be reprising their roles for this new movie.

After her character already had survived in the movie Scream 6, it’s said that Courtney Cox would be returning as the character of Gale Weathers.

Director Christopher Landon’s Exit From Scream 7

Fans were only starting to recover from the news of Barrera and Ortega’s exit from the upcoming Scream 7 film when they were also hit by the news of Landon’s exit from the film as well.

After Barrera got fired, Landon spoke out in a tweet which has now been deleted – that it was not his decision to fire Barrera from the project. Landon seemed unhappy about the decision of Barrera’s departure as he was a massive part of the franchise going forward. Her character Sam Carpenter was also the main focus of the last two films of the series.

At this point, Jenna Ortega was expected to make a return but then it was announced that she also would not be returning after Barrera’s firing. This created even more changes for Landon to deal with.

Why Did He Exit Then?

It is unclear as to why Christopher Landon left Scream 7. However, it can be guessed that losing the core Scream 7 cast of both of the Carpenter sisters was not an ideal situation for him, as the plot moving forward would have been mainly focussing on them.

It would have been fascinating to see what the Freaky and Happy Death Day characters could have done with the franchise of Scream – but to everybody’s bad luck, this is never going to happen anymore.

Scream 7 Possible Plot Line

A script for the plot of Scream 7 has not been completed as of yet, and this is after facing a delay with the strike by Writers Guild Of America – that ended in September. As such, there’s no official plotline for the movie and it remains majorly unclear as to what the movie is going to be about.

While the official details still to this date remain unknown, there are still a lot of interesting directions that the story could go in. As we already have established the fact by now that the departure of the Barreras, is going to put an end to the storyline of Sam. The new movie is likely to move on from her character.

It is going to be interesting to see how this new franchise sets itself apart as each of the Scream installments slowly but surely introduces the rules for the exact type of plot/arc that the characters would find themselves in.

This is especially going to be hard to establish for Scream 7 as Scream 6 did not do a good job in establishing the rules of the plot.

When Is The Film Going To Be Released?

Seeing that there are a lot of projects that are again starting to resume filming after the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike. The release date of Scream 7 has not been announced as of yet. However, it is anticipated that the movie is going to come out a bit in the second half of 2024 or early 2025. It is more possible for the film to get released in early 2025 rather than releasing this year.
